Prize Controversy as Angouleme Comics Festival Opens - and other book news

The Angouleme Comics Festival, one of the world's most respected graphic novel events, is dealing with controversy over its awards program this year. The event will run from January 30 to February 2 and usually attracts 200,000 comics fans to a town in the south of France.

LBF's 2014 Excellence Awards Open for Submissions
The London Book Fair, in association with the U.K. Publishers Association, is now accepting submissions and nominations for the first ever International Publishing Industry Excellence Awards. Entries for the awards must be registered online by February 22.

ReDigi Gets Patent to Manage and Sell Used E-books
Despite ReDigi’s setbacks in court, the Cambridge, Mass.-based marketplace for pre-owned digital content continues to move forward with its plans to resell not only music, but audio books, e-books, and other digital products. The company announced that it has been awarded U.S. patent No. 8,627,500 B2 for its system of “copyless” digital transactions, which allows the company to manage and sell content without making a physical copy.
