More Than a Dream: Kate DiCamillo Reflects on Her 2014 Newbery News
On what may be the coldest day of the year in Minnesota, with temperatures dipping down to the negative teens, 2014 Newbery Award winner Kate DiCamillo might be the only person in the state who’s not complaining. Reporting that she was awakened at home in Minneapolis at 5:30 a.m. CST by “the call” from the Newbery committee, DiCamillo said that she was “stunned” by the news that she had won. “And after I hung up, I started to think that I may have imagined the whole thing.” more »

An 'Unreal' and 'Fantastic' Caldecott Call for 2014 Winner Brian Floca
When PW caught up with Brian Floca by phone on Monday morning, less than an hour after the announcement that he’d won the 2014 Caldecott Medal, he admitted to still feeling “a little punch drunk.” Completely understandable: the phone call from the Caldecott committee came at 6:46 a.m. “I could see it was a call from Pennsylvania,” said the author-illustrator. “There was a part of me that really wanted to go back to sleep, and another part that thought it might be good news.” more »

THE ROUNDUP

How the Internet Made Me a Better Writer: "Everyone says the Internet's making us dumb, but writing about comics online helped me write a book about them," says Noah Berlatsky, in "Salon."

'Between Shades of Gray' Optioned : Ruta Sepetys’ New York Times bestselling WWII-era novel has been optioned by Sorrento Productions and Tauras Films. The name of the film will be changed.

Dueling Ailes and the NYT List : How Gabriel Sherman’s new book on Roger Ailes, The Loudest Voice in the Room will perform on the "New York Times" bestseller list, compared to Zev Chavets’s book, Roger Ailes: Off Camera. Does "the list" punish right-wingers?

A Look at Business in 'Bookstore Alley' : In the past several years, four bookstores have opened within a small-block radius in San Francisco: Adobe Books, Alley Cat Books, Press: Works on Paper and Modern Times Bookstore Collective. Although each store has its own character and clientele, it remains to be seen if the four newcomers can survive.

HC Accuses Apple of Infringement : HarperCollins recently requested that Google remove search engine links to some of its own books on Apple’s iTunes in what appears to be a poorly executed attempt to fight online piracy, reports "TorrentFreak." HarperCollins made the takedown requests through Digimarc, a company that provides anti-piracy protection for publishers and authors.
